October 1 Film screening of The World of Apu

This classic Indian film kicked off five weeks of One Book, One Community events.  The film is the final movie in Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed “Apu Trilogy”.  Set in India in the 1920s it tells the story of a young man’s journey from an aimless, bleak existence to one of responsibility and hope as a husband and father.

President Schmotter welcomed the audience and Mark Hasskarl, Director of the Danbury Library, introduced the film, noting that the Gangulis in The Namesake took their children to see the “Apu Trilogy” when they lived in Cambridge, MA in order to keep them connected to their Indian culture.

Several events will take place in the next month to bring readers together, including book discussions, traditional Indian celebrations, and lectures by the owner of an Indian restaurant as well as the author of “The Namesake” and the director of the movie of the same name.
